I assist with group activities including pet therapy, provide guitar concerts and assist with bringing residents to join activities. I also provide one on one activities with individual residents including conversation and reading.

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering?

I am still working four days a week. My day at Kalyra gives me purpose and really makes me appreciate my health and mobility. Hearing residents’ stories of the early days is really inspiring and interesting.

Val

Eight years with Kalyra Woodcroft.

What type of volunteering do you do?

I have one on one social interaction with individual residents and escort residents to and from activities. Support the Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator with events. Prepare the art and craft area and clean it up after the activity. Provide support in a variety of group activities and make cuppa’s during activities. Socialise with residents and their family.

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering?

I enjoy giving the residents a lift in their day, having a joke with them, listening to their stories and being able to build a relationship with them is so nice. Giving residents the opportunity to share their past lives is amazing.

Wilma

I provide one on one activities with individual residents including socialising, hand massage and escorting residents to and from activities and off site when required. I assist with group activities by setting up the activity areas, setting and clearing dining rooms and provide support to serve meals. I also assist with a range of housekeeping and domestic activities including loading and unloading dishwashers and laundry support.

I like serving people, talking with them, having a good laugh and just feeling that I am doing something worthwhile.

Robyn

How long have you been a volunteer?

Approximately four years.

What type of volunteering do you do?

I engage in one-on-one activities with residents including nail manicure, hand massage and applying nail polish. I also engage in conversation with residents about their history and life experiences. I assist with preparing group activity areas and provide support during the activities.

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering?

I enjoy socialising with the residents, staff and other volunteers. Being in my age group, it was a challenge finding what fitted me in my retirement.

Assisting residents to feel pampered and loved has made my volunteering a pleasure to enjoy.
